About the project

The Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA) is delivering the Water and Sewage Infrastructure Upgrade Project to address ageing water and sewer infrastructure on the Tasman Peninsula.

The existing system is at capacity and does not meet current industry standards. The upgrade will improve reliability and environmental outcomes, secure capacity for up to 30 years, and support the future transfer of assets to TasWater.

The project covers infrastructure from raw water dams along Nubeena Road through to Garden Point, including treatment systems located within the Port Arthur Historic Site. Design, planning and approvals will progress through 2026, with construction expected to begin in early 2027, subject to approvals.

Upgrade locations

  • Port Arthur Historic Site

    Proposed upgrades to the existing water treatment plant and sewerage treatment plant.

  • Garden Point

    Proposed upgrades to water pipelines between Garden Point and the Port Arthur Historic Site.

  • Stewarts Bay

    Proposed construction of a new sewer rising main from Stewarts Bay Lodge to the Port Arthur Historic Site with connections to private pump stations along Illawong Drive.

  • Nubeena Road

    Proposed upgrades to the water pipeline between the upper and lower dams and the Port Arthur Historic Site.

  • McGinnis Dam

    Water pipeline design for potential future requirements.

Community drop-in sessions

The project team will be hosting two drop‑in sessions for the community to learn more about the project, view early design information and ask questions.
